Herrmann Tennis Academy players captured four more titles on May 31 to wrap up the 2008-09 indoor season. Blake Oslan, David Korobov and Emily Barretta each took home titles at the Wildcat Junior Open Championships in Evanston and Conrad Harron won the College Park’ Schools Out’ Open in Bannockburn.
In the Girls’ 16s Barretta dominated her first three matches in Evanston knocking out Olga Wroblewski, Rachel Goldberg, and Deven Hubbard by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. In the finals Emily got the break she needed in each set and topped the #1 seed Alexandra Bergman 6-4, 7-5.
In the Boys’ 14s draw David Korobov received the #2 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals. In his first match Korobov faced his toughest test of the tournament dropping the first set 5-7 to Kyle Scheffers. David took the second 6-3 and the third set superbreak 10-5 to advance to the semifinals. Korobov battled Sam Weiner to a 5-5 tie in the first set, before winning the next two games. David ran away with the second set 6-0. In the finals Korobov staked a 6-1, 5-0 lead before his opponent Brandon Woznickzka withdrew due to injury.
In Boys’ 12s action third seeded Blake Oslan was pushed to the limit in each of his three matches, but pulled out tough wins to capture the title. Oslan beat Steven Hill 7-5, 6-2 in the quarters, #1 seed Josh Cheng 4-6, 78-5, 11-9 in the semis, and Nick Marino 6-3, 7-5 in the championship round.
A huge contingent of HTA players competed in Evanston including: Scott Drier, Hubbard, Ella Lindholm, Marino, Joel Meyer, Weiner, and Wozniczka in addition to the three tournament winners.
“I was extremely impressed with the results from the Evanston Challenger event,” said Academy Owner Ken Herrmann. “Not only did our players capture three championships, but we had academy classmates meet in two of the three finals.”
Conrad Harron kept his winning streak alive as he captured his second consecutive Boys’ 16s championship. Harron entered the tournament as the #1 seed and met John Zordani in the quarterfinals. Zordani and Harron played one of the closes matches of the tournament and Conrad took the highly competitive match 7-6(5), 6-3. Harron lost just one game in the semifinal and final rounds, crusing 6-0, 6-1 against Dillon Joffe and 6-0, 6-0 against Ryosuke Miyawaki.
