6/1/2009 - HTA Players Bring Home Three on Memorial Day Weekend
HTA Standouts Conrad Harron, Nick Hamburger, and Marisa Guggenheim all hit the courts on Memorial Day weekend and came home with challenger titles. Harron and Hamburger won at the College Park Memorial Day Open and Guggenheim won at the Wheaton Memorial Day Championships.
Harron, just 14 years old, didn’t drop a set in his three matches in the Boys’ 16s division. Conrad blanked Mathew Buesing 6-0, 6-0 in his first match and cruised over Jon O’Leary 6-0, 6-2 in the second. In the championship match Harron won a close first set 6-4, before running a way with the second set 6-1.
In the Boys’ 12s Nick Hamburger entered the tournament as the #2 seed and immediately faced a tough test in his first match. Nick dropped the first set 4-6 to John Pooley, before taking the second 6-3 and dominating the superbreak 10-4. In the semifinals Hamburger knocked out Hinsdale’s John McGowen 6-0, 6-1. In an all HTA final Hamburger topped Blake Oslan 6-3, 6-1 for his first title since September.
Guggenheim earned the 2nd seed in the four player draw at the Wheaton Memorial Day Championships. Marisa won with ease in the first round, taking her match 6-1, 6-2 over Emma Eichelman. In the championship match Guggenheim split the first two sets 6-3, 3-6, before picking up her game and collecting her first title of the year.
“The fact that Marisa is the 41st player from the academy to win a title this year speaks volumes of the quality and depth our program,” said HTA Owner Ken Herrmann. “Our players are doing an incredible job preparing themselves for success in the outdoor season.”
