5/23/2009 - Hoogland Takes Level 5 Title
Sam Hoogland won the Glenview Spring Into Summer Open Boys’ 14s Level 5 tournament on May 18th at the Glenview Tennis Center. The title was Hoogland’s first of the season.
As the #2 seed in the draw Sam received a bye into the round of 32. Sam won his first match 6-1, 6-1, his second match 6-1, 6-0, and his third match 6-0, 6-2. In the semifinals Hoogland knocked out Vincent Lin of Schaumburg 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the championship match.
In the finals Hoogland met #3 seed Eric Pontow and came away with a 7-5, 6-3 victory. Pontow was the only seeded player that Hoogland met on route to his title. Only four of the eight seeded players advanced to the quarterfinals in the event. The 88 points from the championship moved Sam up to 48th in the USTA Midwest ranking.
“Sam has made great strides as he has aged up into the 14s,” said HTA Head Coach Ben Pettinari. “I expect great results from Sam this summer and believe he will continue to climb in the rankings.”
