12/04 - Hoogland Takes 4th at National Open

ben hooglandHTA’s Ben Hoogland took fourth place at the USTA National Open held at the Sunset Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo. November 26-30.  Hoogland defeated two players in the top 100 of the USTA national rankings in the event.

Placed in the second quarter of the draw, Hoogland opened with two straight set victories, beating Mason Radford 6-3, 6-2 in the first and Ryan Hudelson 6-4, 6-1 in the second.  Hoogland took out sixth-seeded Zach Katz of Boca Raton 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals Hoogland drew third-seed Ben Guthrie, who is ranked 27th on the current National list.  Dead even after the first twelve games, Hoogland took the first set in a tiebreak and then won the second set 6-3. 

The semifinals matched Hoogland with tournament #1 seed Nelson Vick.  Vick raced out to an early lead and took the first set 6-1, before pulling out the second set 6-3.  In the third place contest Hoogland fell to Chicago district rival Robert Stineman in a tight 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 match. 

“Ben’s persistent hard work has really begun to pay off with the great results he has had since returning from injury,” said HTA Head Coach Ben Pettinari.  I really expect this to lead into a breakout season for Ben. “
