12/03 - Savaglio Captures Consolation at Towpath
After dropping his first match, HTA’s Michael Savaglio bounced back to capture the consolation championship at the Towpath 25th Annual Thanksgiving Junior Championships. This USTA level five event was held at the Towpath Racquet Club in Akron, Ohio November 25-29.
Savaglio, the seventh seed, dropped a tight 7-6(3), 2-6, 10-8 contest to Grayslake’s Nate Campanile to move into the backdraw. He was unmatched in the first two rounds of the consolation, dropping Mark Perisutti and Alex Gain by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Michael topped Harrison Chang 6-1, 6-4 to set up a semifinal match with #5 seed Dan Lubarsky. Lubarsky captured the first set in a tiebreak 7-6(6), but Savaglio would not go down easy as he captured the second set 6-4 to take momentum into the third. Michael raced out to a quick lead and didn’t look back as he won 10-1 in the tiebreak. He then closed out his run with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Siddarth Ahuja.
Other HTA competitors in the draw were Michael Baddeloo (1-1), Adam Davidson (1-1), Eric Klawitter (1-1), and Sam Wiener (1-2).
