5/20/2009 - Drier Takes May Boys’ Challenger at Lincolnshire
HTA twelve-year-old Scott Drier won his first tournament of the season at the Lincolnshire May Boys’ & Girls’ Championship on May 17. Drier was one of six HTA players to compete in the level 6 Challenger.
Drier cruised in the twelve player draw, only dropping six games in his three matches. Driers first match was ultimately his closest, with Scott topping Hao Chen 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals Drier ran away with his match 6-1, 6-0 and in the finals he continued his hot streak and beat #2 seed Samuel Torrence 6-0, 6-1.
“While Scott has only been playing tennis competitively for a little over a year, he has applied his previous experience as a tournament chess player to his performance on the tennis court. While perfecting the various technical aspects of his game, Scott has an innate sense of how to move the ball around the court and construct his points,” said HTA Head Coach Peter Heckler. “As he become more comfortable with his body’s recent growth spurt, and in conjunction with his physical training with Mindee at Top Top Training, I look for Scott to become increasingly better at developing his offensive capabilities and finishing off points as he moves up into the 14’s this summer. I am very proud of the progress he has made in such a short time.”
Joining Drier in the event were Patrick Rourke, Ella Lindholm, Max MacKinnon, Patrick McFadden, and Michael McFadden. Patrick, Michael, and Max each went 1-1 in the tournament, winning their first match before being knocked out. Rourke finished 2-1 making it to the finals in the boys’ 14s draw, where he lost to Johnathan Travetto 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
