02/19/2009 – Michael Moore Named 2008 Player of the Year

Michael MooreHerrmann Tennis Academy member Michael Moore has been selected by the Chicago Tennis Patrons as the recipient of the 2008 Kevie Schwartz Memorial Award.  The award recognizes an outstanding boy in any junior division for the highest standards of tennis accomplishments, character, conduct, sportsmanship, and demeanor.  Kevie Schwartz founded Tennis Corporation of America and built the Midtown Tennis Club.

“Michael is a fine young man and a great representative of the community, the academy, and the Chicago District,” said HTA Owner Ken Herrmann.  “All of us at the academy are so excited that Michael has been honored with this significant award!”

Michael finished 2008 ranked 4th in the Midwest Section and 82nd in the Nation.  In November he signed a National Letter of Intent to compete at the University of Notre Dame beginning in the fall of 2009. This past summer he won the Chicago District Qualifier and the Midwest Open Championships.

“In the three years that I have coached him, he has worked hard, been respectful, and demonstrated the finest sportsmanship and character of any player that I have ever coached in the past 41 years,” said Glenbrook South Coach Bill Lange.  “When he walks off the court, you can’t tell if he’s won or lost. He treats his opponents with respect, and in turn, they do the same for him. He seems to be under control at all times. I honestly can’t think of any match he has played that he lost composure and slipped in his commitment to good sportsmanship.”

In addition to his abilities as a tennis player Moore is also an excellent student as he carries a 4.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and scored a 32 on the ACT.  When he is not on the court or in the classroom Michael spends his time volunteering at Misericordia Heart of Mercy, a home for mentally and physically disabled young adults.  He is involved with the service organization, Key Club, and the anti-drug group, Student to Student.  Moore plans to study pre-med at Notre Dame.

Moore is the fourth Herrmann Tennis Academy member to win the award since the academy opened its doors in 1999. The previous academy members to win the award were Russell Bennett, Ryan Heller, and Ryan Preston.  Bennett, Heller, and Preston went on to enjoy stellar collegiate careers at Northwestern, Michigan, and Vanderbilt, respectively.

Moore will be presented with the award at the Chicago Tennis Patrons Evening of Champions Banquet on February 28. The Tennis Patrons are the not-for-profit organization that is the fundraising arm for CDTA Junior Programs.
