01/28/09 - Blankfield Wins First Tournament

Brendan BlankfieldPlaying in the first tournament of his career Brendan Blankfield won the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center Boys’ 10s January Championships in Winnetka, Ill. on January 25.

Blankfield got off to a great start, topping William Neild 8-0 in his very first USTA match.  In the second round Brendan faced his toughest test of the tournament and was tied at 7-7 with #2 seed Khari Sanchez in the quarterfinals, before being the first to take four points in the last game of the no-add set.  In the semifinals, Blankfield beat William Zordani
8-5 in the 8-game pro set.

It was an all HTA final as Blankfield faced third-seeded Michael McFadden in the championship round.  In a match of classmates, Blankfield took an early lead in route to an 8-2 victory.

“I was very impressed that he won a tournament in his first attempt,” said HTA Head Coach Paul Wei.  “It’s a pretty rare feat for a player to accomplish”.
