01/21/09 - Hoogland Takes Third at B18 Designated

Ben HooglandBen Hoogland led a strong contingent of HTA players by taking third place at the 2009 USTA Midwest Section Boys’ 18 Designated event held in Kalamazoo January 10-12. Hoogland was one of five HTA players coached by Ben Pettinari at the event.

Hoogland won his first match 6-3, 6-2 before receiving a walkover in the second round.  In the third round he topped Tommy Marx 6-1, 6-4 and in the fourth round he battled 16th seed Andy Jackson 7-6(3) in the first set and pulled away 6-0 in the second.  In the semifinals he fell to eventual champion Greg Andrews 6-3, 6-0.  Hoogland’s opponent in his third place match, Billy Bertha, withdrew due to injury.

Moore

Michael Moore also had an outstanding showing, rebounding from a second round loss by taking five straight matches to reach the semifinals of the consolation draw.  In the backdraw Moore only dropped five games and shut out ninth-seed Sam Ecker 6-0, 6-0. 

Brantner Jones

Brantner Jones lost to Wyatt Lippert 6-4, 6-4 in the second round and caught fire in the consolation field winning three consecutive matches in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals qualifier. 

Etham Frenkel and Luke Gensburg rounded out the HTA contingent and each player finished 2-2 in the 64 player field. The second-seed Andrews beat fourth-seeded Lippert 7-5, 6-3 in the championship match.
