01/06/09 - Barretta & Herrmann Battle 2 1/2 Hours in B10s Finals at GRC/HTA January Championship
In a preview of what could be one of the top rivalries in the Chicago District for the next eight years, Jeremy Barretta defeated Kenny Herrmann 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the finals of the Glenbrook Racquet Club/Herrmann Tennis Academy January Championships B10 division. The match, the last to finish on Sunday, lasted two and a half hours.
Barretta, the second seed, cruised into the finals beating Jonny Raab 6-0, 6-1 and Jeffrey Chen 6-2, 6-0. Herrmann also had an easy route taking out Andrew Finke 6-1, 6-2 and top-seed Daniel Beedle 6-4, 6-0
Barretta and Herrmann teamed up to take the Boys’ 10 doubles title beating their opponents 8-1 and 8-2 in the round robin event.
Another rising-star in the HTA program, Corey Schwartz, reached the first final of his career. Schwartz took out two other HTA members, Matthew Ong and Patrick McFadden, in his first two matches prior to knocking out two seeded players.
Schwartz topped third-seeded Christopher Casati 6-1, 6-4 before entering into a long battle with second-seeded David Weller. Schwartz dropped the first set 4-6, before roaring back to take the second 6-2. In the third set Schwartz proved too consistent for Weller and won 6-4. Schwartz joined B10 competitor Michael McFadden as one of two tournament sportsmanship award winners.
Maddie Kahn, playing in the girls’ 12 division, made it to the finals of an event for the eighth time since April. She won her first two matches in straight sets and fell to #1 seed Michelle Linden 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
"It was very excited to see the academy represented in three of the four finals," said tournament director Jim Kultgen. "Barretta, Herrmann, and Kahn each had excellent results, and this may go down as Corey Schwartz's breakout tournament."
In the girls 10’s GRC player Lauren Delfs won two matches in the first tournament of her young career.
